  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a sheet cake pan generously.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt the butter with the water in a saucepan over medium heat, then stir in cocoa powder and bring to a boil.
  4. Pour the boiling mixture over the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Whisk together buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla in a separate bowl. Gradually add to the cake batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the frosting by combining butter, cocoa powder, and milk in a saucepan; bring to a boil then stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Frost the warm cake with the frosting once it’s out of the oven.
  9. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider incorporating almond extract or espresso powder into the batter. Store the cake at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
