Delicious homemade soft pretzels with a crispy crust and soft, chewy interior, perfect as a snack or appetizer.

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by dissolving it and the sugar in warm water. Let sit for about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients by combining the flour and salt in a large bowl, then pour in the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into 8 equal pieces and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Prepare the boiling solution by bringing 10 cups of water to a boil and adding baking soda.
  7. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds in the boiling solution.
  8. Brush each boiled pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake pretzels for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve with cheese sauce, mustard, or sweet spreads. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
