A classic German Chocolate Cake that combines rich chocolate, coconut, and pecans for a decadent dessert experience.

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to your dry mixture.
  4. Incorporate the boiling water into the batter.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans, tapping them gently to release air bubbles.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.
  8. Frost with a mixture of sweetened coconut and chopped pecans in your chosen frosting.
